New US-China Automotive Campaign Launches at ZAPTREES.ORG
SAN FRANCISCO, CA–(MARKET WIRE)–Nov 20, 2006 — To help counter global warming due to CO2 emissions, California automotive pioneer ZAP (OTC BB:ZAAP.OB – News) is challenging the world to plant one million trees. The challenge came during the launch of its new electric car and truck at The San Francisco International Auto Show, open until Sunday, November 26.
ZAP’s campaign, which invites other groups, companies and individuals to join in the planting of trees, is being launched on its new website ZAPTREES.ORG (http://www.zaptrees.org). One tree would be planted in China for each XEBRA electric car sold. ZAP intends to have one million trees planted by 2010. ZAP has already provided the funding for 50,000 trees to be planted over the next 12 months.
“The world’s clean air leaders have been telling us that one of the best ways to fight global warming and pollution is to replace a gas car that is used for short trips with an electric car,” says ZAP Chairman Gary Starr. “Trees can also play an important part in the planet’s ability to offset carbon dioxide levels and our goal is for each XEBRA we sell, to provide funding for 100 trees.”
Last month, ZAP and manufacturing partner Shandong Jindalu planted “The America China Friendship Tree” in China to symbolize their new joint venture. On Saturday, a sister tree was planted in San Francisco by ZAP co-founder Starr and Yong Jiang, a representative of Shandong Jindalu. 22 trees were planted on Saturday in partnership with ZAP and local non-profit Friends of the Urban Forest (http://www.fuf.net/) as part of its 25th Avenue Tree Planting Project. At a Noon news conference inside the Auto Show at The Moscone Center, Gary Starr of the US and Yong Jiang of China encouraged the public to donate $25 for every electric car they purchase, so they can offset additional gas car use. The donations would be used to plant up to 200 trees through Trees for the Future and other groups.
“Gas-burning cars are the second-largest source of US global warming pollution, and one you can do something about. But Americans will put more than 300 million new cars on the road over the next 20 years — if these gas cars were substituted with electric cars, we could make a major difference,” said Starr. “Here’s the math: If you drive a gas car that gets 25 miles per gallon, this car would produce approximately 10,000 pounds of C02. If you replace this gas car with an electric car, even after counting power plants emission to generate the power, you can prevent up to 90 percent of these emission from entering the atmosphere.”
Recently, ZAP and Shandong Jindalu announced the building of ZAP/Shandong auto manufacturing facility that would produce a variety of alternative fuel vehicles that reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
The Company has also launched a new solar-powered electric car called the XEBRA XERO, now on display at The San Francisco International Auto Show November. The vehicle comes with a rooftop solar panel that can allow it to be a 100 percent non-polluting car. The XERO allows the driver with a short commute to own a vehicle that can refuel on a cheap and renewable resource — sunlight. Panels consume no fuel and have no moving parts to wear out. The only maintenance is to occasionally wash for highest performance.
