StockGuru Blog: Edgeline Holdings (ELHI) Provides VOIP Security — The Foundation of VOIP Growth

OTCBB: ELHI – StockGuru Profile – Edgeline Holdings Website

I think the recent three day outage at Skype underlines the absolutely critical need for security in the VOIP arena. Unless businesses can trust their VOIP service to be there 24/7, they simply cannot use VoIP. No business can afford be to without telephony access for two to three days.

ELHI’s focus is right on target and they are front and center in this march toward VoIP adoption by small and medium business enterprises. However, these companies typically do not have an IT staff and, for them, VoIP security that is built in is crucial. A systems Denial of Service Attack would shut down the telephony service and no business can afford to be without their telephony system for an hour, much less days — like Skype’s recent three day long customer outage!

ELHI’s focus is crucial to the success and adoption of VOIP.

Business VOIP networks are a prime target for different types of attacks. The potential targets and vulnerabilities are numerous and so are the different types of attacks that might be utilized.

Secure Voice will focus on technologies that it feels have added value to current market-proven technologies, effectively reducing the risk inherent in research and design efforts.

Currently its primary focus will be on developing and readying for market a SIP (Session Initiation Protocol) based approach to defending voice traffic and voice packets against deliberate attacks such as DoS (Denial of Service).

VoIP is a primary new focus for hackers and attackers.

Perhaps you have noticed attackers don’t go after operating systems like they used to. They’ve found bigger fish to fry in flawed applications like VoIP, the average AV, database, IM or media player program. They’re also paying more attention to flaws in the routers and switches that keep the Internet afloat and are successfully stealing data from government networks.

The security experts who contributed to the SANS Institute’s Top 20 vulnerability list added VoIP for the first time to their vulnerability list. The Bethesda, Md.-based organization research director noted findings in their recent report that show a major backslide in efforts to achieve ironclad information security.

Number four on the list for the first time was a surge in VOIP (Voice over Internet Protocol) attacks in which attackers can intercept and sell company meeting minutes, inject misleading messages or create massive outages in the old phone network. SANS noted IT security officers shouldn’t underestimate the ability of hackers to exploit VoIP for financial gain. There are multiple active cases where someone took over a company’s VoIP system, stole the minutes, then they turned around and sold them. VoIP systems are a front door into a program that runs entire phone systems. Attackers can exploit VoIP to change what you hear and can cause huge outages.

I think we can all understand that VoIP Security matters!

IP telephony is a revolutionary technology with the potential to completely rework the world’s phone systems. It is constantly gaining popularity and the number of IP telephony enabled networks continues to grow rapidly and this growth can only continue under the security umbrella — precisely the umbrella ELHI holds.

The objective of Secure Voice developing technology is to detect a subset of these attacks, known as flood attacks. These are classified as Denial of Service attacks and build upon the idea of sending data from one or several attackers at a higher rate than the target can process the received data. This will prohibit voice systems from being able to maintain the intended service level.

The importance of this kind of product to the market is obvious, knowing the availability demands put on the telephony services of today. Secure Voice’s approach is unique and the Company will be pursuing a patent for this unique technology.

So what happened with Skype? Skype says the problem was triggered by a Microsoft patch, delivered by Windows Update, which caused an automatic reboot of many PCs. “The high number of restarts affected Skype’s network resources. This caused a flood of log-in requests, which, combined with the lack of peer-to-peer network resources, prompted a chain reaction,” says Skype’s Villu Arak. According to Arak, the system would normally have recovered quickly, but on this occasion “a previously unseen bug” caused the network to fail. Some observers have speculated that Skype’s entire distributed database became unsynchronized and had to be rebuilt, accounting for the long delay.

With all vendors committed to SIP, Secure Voice’s ability to create a secure environment is crucial to the ongoing success of VoIP and its adoption by small and medium enterprises.

ELHI provides a secure environment for VoIP. In order for VOIP to be embraced in the business community it is crucial for VOIP to operate in a secure environment.
