ZAP – ZP

In September 2005, ZAP bought a 20 percent stake in Obvio ! . The new Obvio ! model was presented at the San Francisco International Auto Show in January 2006, at the Los Angeles Auto Show and the International Auto Show-Orlando in February 2006. ZAP, which is known as U.S. alternative vehicles dealer, is exclusive dealer of Obvio ! models in North America, not just the United States. As part of a strategic partnership between Obvio ! and ZAP has an office at the FNM Industrial Complex in Brazil where its Obvio ! partners and suppliers will also be present. To create a center for Obvio ! ’s manufacturing. The Duque de Caxias City Hall has offered 21 years rental of this industrial complex to Obvio ! at no cost. The new cars will be produced in a plant in Duque de Caxias, in the southeastern state of Rio de Janeiro. The plant will start operations in 2007 with investments of $25M ( 20.95 mln euro).

Because 4,000 or more jobs will be created to manufacture Obvio ! the Brazilian government is cooperating at the highest levels to make this successful. There will be no duty on the Obvio ! .

“There is a skilled workforce residing nearby the FNM , in Baixada Fluminense and Xerem. And we’ve settled a partnership with FUNDEC – Municipal Social and Technologic Development Foundation, to form and re-train the employees with SESI and SENAI support,” says Ricardo Machado, plant manager.

A former airplanes motor complex was given by the “Land & Lease Act” of the U.S. to the Brazilian government after the Second World War. It was used by the United States as a military bases for soldiers for refueling and maintenance. Later became the Alfa-Romeo Manufacturing facility for trucks and cars until it was sold to Fiat.

Now it is the new home of Obvio !

Steve Schneider, ZAP CEO stated: “The cooperation of the Brazilian government, the twenty-one year lease at no cost, the abundance of workers, and the new supplier driven support model all work together to create a profitable combination for Obvio ! We learned the ins and outs of importing vehicles to the United States and we are more than up to the challenge of manufacturing and distributing this vehicle of the future.”
