Safety concerns are growing among the thousands of families that benefit from the society’s assistance, according to Autism Society of America President Scott Badesch. Wandering is one of the primary concerns, as nearly 50 percent of the children that have been diagnosed with autism will wander. Most often, these children and young individuals wander away from their own homes or classrooms. There are several main triggers for such behavior, including enjoyment of exploring, an attempt to get to a place that the child loves, an attempt to leave a stressful situation or the desire to get close to something interesting. This tendency to stray away from safe environments can lead to serious personal safety risks.

The results were based on a survey carried out among parents. Of those questioned, 23.8 percent reported that they’d used a tracking device at least once. Of those who currently reported using such a tracking device, the vast majority had opted for the technology to ensure peace of mind in terms of safety. Parents using tracking technology also said that they felt more comfortable (81.7 percent) allowing children to spend time with friends when a parent is not available.
