- Orthopedic care is increasingly focused not only on relieving symptoms, but on delivering durable outcomes that can stand up over time.
- That shift is creating greater interest in regenerative approaches designed to restore damaged tissue rather than simply address the immediate effects of injury.
- Regentis Biomaterials is advancing this approach with GelrinC, a degradable hydrogel implant designed to support the regeneration of durable cartilage in the knee.
Orthopedic medicine has long focused on relieving pain and restoring mobility. Increasingly, though, the question is: How well will the result hold up over time?
That question is particularly important in cartilage repair. Unlike many other tissues, cartilage has limited natural capacity to heal itself. The goal is to create an environment where damaged tissue can be repaired in a way that delivers meaningful and sustained results.
This emphasis on durability is helping drive interest in regenerative medicine, including approaches designed to replace damaged tissue with newly regenerated tissue rather than relying solely on temporary symptom management.
One company pursuing this approach is Regentis Biomaterials Ltd. (NYSE American: RGNT), a regenerative medicine company developing tissue repair solutions with an initial focus on orthopedic applications. Its technology is built around the Gelrin platform, which uses degradable hydrogel implants to support the body’s natural regenerative processes.
The company’s lead product, GelrinC, is a cell-free, off-the-shelf hydrogel that is cured as a temporary implant into the knee. Rather than remaining permanently in the body, GelrinC gradually resorbs. As it retreats, newly generated cartilage fills the space, creating a controlled process intended to restore the damaged area with new tissue.
According to Regentis, the implant is designed to be fully resorbed within approximately six to nine months, at which point new cartilage has covered the treated lesion.
The procedure is also designed with practicality in mind. Regentis says GelrinC can be implanted in approximately 10 minutes, fits into existing surgical workflows and is associated with a short recovery period of approximately two weeks. Its off-the-shelf design is intended to further simplify adoption while potentially offering a substantial cost advantage compared with certain alternative treatments.
Importantly, GelrinC has already achieved a CE mark in Europe, giving Regentis a commercial pathway in that market while the company continues advancing the product in the United States.
Regentis has conducted a Pilot/Phase II study of GelrinC, with results indicating 100% greater pain improvement compared with the traditional microfracture procedure. The company is now conducting its U.S. pivotal Phase III clinical study while preparing for the Premarket Approval (“PMA”) process with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.
Durability is also something Regentis measures directly. To assess the quality of the cartilage GelrinC helps regenerate, the company uses MOCART (Magnetic Resonance Observation of Cartilage Repair Tissue), a validated MRI-based score that evaluates the quantity and quality of repair tissue. Regentis says it is the first company to extensively use MOCART as an endpoint in a clinical study and to have the FDA’s acceptance of this approach. Long-term follow-up results from the Phase II study, published in the peer-reviewed journal Cartilage, showed a mean MOCART score of 88.8 out of 100 at 24 months, including 86.8 for chondral lesions and 94.1 for osteochondral lesions. According to the company, the data indicate that two years after treatment, the repaired cartilage appears very close to normal healthy cartilage.
That clinical progress is unfolding alongside an expanding commercialization effort. In a recent BioMedWire podcast appearance, Regentis CEO Dr. Ehud Geller discussed the company’s technology, market opportunity and priorities for the remainder of 2026.
Among those priorities is completing enrollment of the remaining patients in the company’s pivotal U.S. study while continuing to advance commercialization efforts, particularly in Europe, where Regentis already has authorization to market and sell GelrinC(R).
Those milestones provide an important backdrop to the company’s larger vision. Regentis is not simply seeking to develop another way of treating knee cartilage damage; it is pursuing a regenerative approach built around the idea that the quality of a repair should ultimately be measured by how well it lasts.
As orthopedic medicine continues to evolve, that may prove to be one of the most important measures of progress: not simply whether a treatment can provide relief today, but whether it can help patients maintain that improvement well into the future.
