As of 10 a.m. Friday morning, Ike was still classified as a Category 2 hurricane. Experts fear the similarities between the current course of this storm and one that struck Galveston, Texas in 1900, killing 8,000 people and going on record as the deadliest weather event in U.S. history. Nationwide Foreclosure Rates Increase at Slower Pace

Despite a 27 percent increase in August's foreclosures over the same period in 2007, the rate at which they are being filed has slowed significantly versus year-over-year data for June and July. Both months showed increases of at least fifty percent, making August's numbers seem small by comparison. However, in August alone, more than 90,000 properties were repossessed as a result of defaulted loans. By the end of the year, total foreclosures are expected to come close to the three million mark. Dry Growing Season Adversely Affects Corn, Soybean Harvests

On Friday the 12th, the U.S. Department of Agriculture reduced harvest estimates for this season's corn and soybean crops in a report that threatens to boost commodity prices. This comes at an inopportune time, after this summer saw the price of corn skyrocketing to $8.00 per bushel as a result of Midwest flooding. Time to Look at Silver

It has not been an easy time for investors in commodity and commodity-related securities this past month. Nearly all commodities have plunged in the last 30 days, some to new 52-week lows. From seeing the US economy as being very weak and the rest of the global economy as being fairly strong, it has all now reversed. Now the hedge funds see the U.S. being the…
