Consumer Confidence Rises for Third-Straight Month; Future Contingent on Unemployment Rates

The Conference Board today said its consumer confidence index rose to 55.9 in January, up from 53.6 reported in December, marking the third-consecutive increase and the highest level in more than a year. The index beat economists’ January forecast of 53.5. The report fueled another day in the green on Wall Street, marking the second day of gains spurred by consumer confidence. Investor sentiment lifted the Dow 100 points since Monday – recovering some of the losses from last week’s 550-point drop.
