Early-Morning Gains Pared – Stocks Turn Downward

Wall Street rallied early on Monday amid talk of a $586 billion Chinese stimulus package, however, optimism diminished over the course of the afternoon sending stocks lower. After spiking 215 points, the Dow reversed course and fell more than 150 points by late afternoon. Investor confidence continues to suffer as the markets continue to exhibit wholly-unreliable qualities. Other indices also experienced trouble on the day. Let us hear your thoughts below:

AIG: Recipient of Largest-Ever Private Company Bailout

As was foreseen by experts last week, a restructuring of the government aid package provided for American International Group, Inc. was enacted today as it became apparent that the felled insurance giant would be unable to rise to the terms of the original $85 billion provided by the federal government. Circuit City Stores Inc. (CC) Files for Chapter 11 Protection

The second-largest electronics retailer in America filed for bankruptcy today. Circuit City Stores, Inc., facing threats of refused delivery from vendors for the approaching holiday season, made the decision to file for Chapter 11 in an attempt to buy itself some time to develop a plan for restructuring. According to acting president and CEO, James Marcum, the action "should provide us with the opportunity to strengthen our balance sheet, create a more efficient expense structure and ultimately position the company to compete more effectively."
